Golden passports on trial: Can the EU stop countries from selling citizenship?
Written in the lead-up to the CJEU ruling, Transparency International analysed the European Commission's case against Malta’s golden passport scheme. In recent years, numerous cases have shown that criminal and corrupt actors acquired such passports, and a consensus has emerged that these schemes opened the EU’s doors to money laundering, corruption and security risks.
