“This Was Politicized From Day One”
🎙️This Week on One Decision:
Former Israeli Deputy National Security Adviser Prof. Chuck Freilich joins hosts Sir Richard Dearlove and Christina Ruffini to explain why, after a lifetime of supporting the two-state solution, he now believes it is no longer viable.
Professor Freilich dismisses the two-state solution as having "about zero" chance and instead promotes a three-pillar plan: confederation with Jordan, territorial expansion of Gaza, and Israeli civil disengagement from the West Bank, which he says has already drawn "considerable interest" in Israel.
Why Timing Matters on Palestinian Statehood
Professor Freilich warns that European leaders’ recent moves to recognize Palestinian statehood amount to an “egregious error.” While well-intentioned, he argues, the initiatives are dangerously timed as they risk rewarding Hamas in the aftermath of October 7.
Netanyahu’s Power Struggle and Its Costs
Freilich acknowledges that Israel’s military position is stronger today than it was a year ago. Still, he argues, Hamas remains in control of Gaza, and Netanyahu’s efforts to cling to power pose grave risks to Israel’s democracy — and to the lives of both soldiers and hostages.
Aid, Hostages, and the Battle for Narrative
Freilich rejects claims of a deliberate Israeli "starvation policy," calling them "false" and the product of politicized assessments made "from day one." He says the crisis has been compounded by Hamas and armed groups diverting aid.
In his view, Israel should now "flood Gaza with humanitarian aid," but he cautions that ending the war in exchange for hostages would leave Hamas in control and able to claim victory despite the destruction.
