The Global Atlas & Information Centre provides comprehensive data on armed conflicts and the exploitation and degradation of natural resources. In partnership with EEAS-FPI (former DG RELEX) it is funded through Instrument for Stability and is a collaborative project with the UN and other international organizations.

Natural resources are sometimes managed inadequately or irresponsibly; being illegally exploited and traded. This contributes directly and indirectly to tensions, insecurity and armed conflict across the globe. Such problems are becoming increasingly widespread in regions like Central Asia, the African Great Lakes, and the Horn of Africa. The lack of proper governance, accountability to citizens and adequate involvement of the international community can also fuel existing conflicts over finite resources, especially where access to these resources is a matter of political conflict.

The lack of appropriate and up to date information has been a critical limitation in the design of suitable programs of crisis prevention and response. The Global Atlas and Information Centre on Natural Resources and Conflicts aims to contribute towards enhancing the understanding of the links between the exploitation of natural resources and conflicts in specific parts of the world, and to provide scientific based evidence to support policy developments.
