60 years of the European Social Charter

OnThisDay in 1961, the European Social Charter was opened for signature in Turin (Italy). Today, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of this Council of Europe's landmark treaty, often referred to as the Social Constitution of Europe. Together with the European Convention on Human Rights, they are the two fundamental elements of the European human rights protection system.

The rights to employment, housing, health, education, social protection and social assistance, and far more, are guaranteed by the Charter, which was revised in 1996 to include more rights. The Charter specifically focuses on the protection of vulnerable people such as the elderly, children, migrants and people with disabilities.

Aujourd'hui, nous célébrons le 60e anniversaire de ce traité historique du Conseil de l'Europe, souvent appelée la Constitution sociale de l'Europe. Avec la Convention européenne des droits de l'homme, ils constituent les deux éléments fondamentaux du système européen de protection des droits de l'homme.

Les droits à l'emploi, au logement, à la santé, à l'éducation, à la protection sociale et à l'aide sociale, et bien plus encore, sont garantis par la Charte qui fût révisée en 1996 pour inclure davantage de droits. La Charte met spécifiquement l'accent sur la protection des personnes vulnérables telles que les personnes âgées, les enfants, les migrants et les personnes handicapées.
